Message The concept of "Never get sick again" was discovered in human history of infectious diseases, such as the plague and smallpox. The mechanism is now referred to as "immunological memory". Vaccines protect against infection with certain pathogens by deliberately inducing immunological memory, which is done primarily by memory T cells. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the generation and maintenance of memory T cells are largely unknown. In this study, we will elucidate the mechanisms for memory T cell generation and maintenance in immunological memory, which will lead to the development of ideal vaccines.
